READY FOR THE TRACK - Crew Chief Brad Jensen, left and driver JR Ray, of JR Ray Sprint Car Racing with their AMSOIL-equipped midget car that wins races for them in the Pacific Northwest racing circuit.

AMSOIL Gives Sprint Car Winning Edge

The deafening roar of engines and the smell of methanol fill the air as fans scream for their favorite drivers during a quarter-mile flat out sprint to the finish line.

That's what makes sprint car racing one of the most exciting sports out there.

JR Ray, of JR Ray Sprint Car Racing, has been running full-bore since 1975 racing one-quarter midgets on race tracks in the Pacific Northwest.

These cars are equipped with Chevy V-8 short block, 800-horsepower engines, revving at 6,000 rpms, flying around the track at speeds in excess of 150 mph. They're open-wheeled cars that battle every inch of the way around the track - sliding sideways around the turns, weaving in and out on the straight-aways, searching for the fastest spot on the track. Sometimes, the lead changes two or three times in a single lap.

These are the conditions that put engine oils and lubes to the test and, according to Ray, AMSOIL synthetic motor oils are up to the task.

Since meeting AMSOIL Dealer Reginald Chavis of Bellevue, Wash. a couple of years ago, Ray has seen the results he and team owner Chuck Sherwood sought for the midget.

"With the will and determination to be the best, you have to use the best," Ray said.

In the past, oil was changed after every race using conventional motor oil. Now, the AMSOIL 10W-40 High Performance Motor Oil gets changed after every fourth race. And that's only because the methanol - a high octane fuel similar to jet fuel - mixes with the oil in this type of engine and could potentially dilute the oil too much. However, oil analysis after four races show the AMSOIL synthetic is still good for continued use.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil resists oil breakdown better than any other oil Ray has ever seen. That alone has Ray sold on AMSOIL products.

Ray also uses AMSOIL Series 2000 Racing Grease on the suspension and AMSOIL Series 2000 75W-90 Gear Lube in the differentials.

In last year's race season, Ray brought victory home seven times. "The engine never even worked up a sweat," said Ray.

Crew Chief Brad Jensen, who was accustomed to routinely working on the car, now finds time on his hands.

"I don't know what to do with myself," Jensen said. "The car is performing remarkably. I have nothing to fix."

More than his years as a race car driver make it clear Ray is no rookie. He boasts more than 100 career wins, including the Furondy Grand Prix in Anchorage, Ala.; five Columbia River Sprint Car Association (CRSCA) wins; and seven wins in the Washington Econo Sprint Car Association (WESCA). He also has set four track records and taken third place in the West Coast nationals.

Chavis sponsors the race team with product for the racing season. He has a booth at the race track and has found the events to be a big help to growing his AMSOIL Dealership. "At the Western Washington Fair I signed up eight Dealers in one day," Chavis said.

The exposure he is able to get for AMSOIL at every event has helped increase his profitability through bringing in new Dealers and Preferred Customers, as well as giving him a unique opportunity to spread the news of the quality and performance of AMSOIL products.

"AMSOIL has really been an improvement by keeping expenses down and protection up," Ray said. "You just can't ask for a better product."

AMSOIL Quality Impresses Harley Riders

Although Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company routinely tells its customers they must use "Harley-specific" motor oils and lubes, some riders are realizing AMSOIL keeps the popular bikes running cooler and smoother.

Jim Murphy and Jim White, partners at Lehman Trike Conversion business in Martinsburg, W. Vw., spread the word that AMSOIL makes the best products - even for Harleys.

"Trikes are a huge business," White said. "Our business increased 200 percent last year." He attributes that to older riders and those with disabilities that require modifications to allow them to continue riding. The shop specializes in those modifications needed for handicapped riders. Partner Jim Murphy summed up his feelings about AMSOIL products recently while talking with a group of customers at the parts counter of the local Harley dealership.

"If there is any single way to significantly improve the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, put AMSOIL in the engine and transmission," Murphy said.

The partners recommend AMSOIL 20W-50 Synthetic Motorcycle Oil for the bikes and 75W-90 Gear Lube for the gear box. They're also selling a lot of the AMSOIL Shock Therapy Light Suspension Fluid for the front forks.

White uses those products in his 1993 Heritage Softail Nostalgia, one of only 2,700 manufactured as a special edition Harley. The bike is attached to a full-sized sidecar. That's a lot of pull on the machine, he said, but AMSOIL makes his bike run cooler and perform better than other oils or lubricants ever have.

"My Harley, with a sidecar, is getting 40 miles per gallon. I think AMSOIL makes a huge difference," he said.

He's heard increased mileage claims from some of his Gold Wing customers too.

Murphy and White opened their shop in 1998. While their specialties are trike conversions and custom builds for riders with handicaps, they also service and maintain cruisers and street bikes of every brand and model.

Harley owners are hard sells, White acknowledged. In fact, he said, most motorcycle riders tend to stick with products they've used and believed in for years.

He and Murphy are of the same ilk, so they understand. "The first two customers you had to convince were us," White said. "The products that we sell are the result of satisfactory testing on our own motorcycles. We do not sell products that we do not totally believe in."

White first used AMSOIL motor oil in the 1970s when he was a semi-professional go-kart racer. In January 2002, he met Direct Dealer Ralph Graul at a bike show and remembered how well the AMSOIL product performed in the karts.

He installed AMSOIL motor oil in his 1993 Harley-Davidson FLST Cowglide that was running hot, 220 to 230 degrees in the summer, and had a "klunky" transmission. "I changed the engine oil, primary and transmission oils to AMSOIL and immediately noticed a smoother shift in the transmission and temperature drop of 20 to 30 degrees," White said. "I was impressed, but I still hadn't done my own testing. For the next 2,500 miles the shifting got better and better."

Murphy tested AMSOIL lubricants in his 1994 Harley-Davidson FXLR, with 60,000 plus miles on the engine.

"This motorcycle has been meticulously maintained throughout its entire life," Murphy said. "The transmission was making some gear noise and was getting harder to shift, and the engine had a whining noise in the updated cam and breather gears.

"Immediately, the transmission shifted like butter and no more gear noise . . . and the persistent gear whine in the engine also miraculously disappeared."

They stock other brands of motor oils in the shop, for the hard-to-convince. "But AMSOIL outsells it all," White said.

Educating customers, according to White, is one of their most important jobs.

AMSOIL literature available in the shop often gives his customers the information they need to make informed choices.

"I've never had one customer come back and claim that AMSOIL lubricants don't do what the company says they will do," White said.

Grain Hauler Cuts Costs With AMSOIL

Klump (13K)

ON THE ROAD - AMSOIL Dealer Troy Klump, left, Keller Grain owner Burnell Keller, center, and company manager Michael Keller, all of Castroville, Texas, gather near a truck they converted to AMSOIL synthetic motor oil.

The promise of reduced operating and maintenance costs netted AMSOIL Dealers Troy and Tammie Klump, Castroville, Texas, a plum of an account.

Keller Grain, Inc. in Castroville buys high quality white and yellow corn from local farmers and trucks it to processing plants across the state of Texas. The company has been in business since the 1960s.

These trucks put on about 12,000 miles a month," said Burnell Keller, the company's owner.

He recently met AMSOIL Dealer Troy Klump, who told Keller AMSOIL products could cut his operating and maintenance costs in half, provide better fuel economy, easier starts and extended oil drains at least three times longer than he was getting with the Exxon XD3-30 he was using and changing every 10,000 miles.

"We were fixing to extend the drain to 15,000 miles," Keller said. "But a sample of the Exxon motor oil analyzed at 10,000 miles came back saying the oil needed to be changed. I said, let's give AMSOIL a whirl."

Keller installed AMSOIL 15W-40 Heavy Duty Diesel and Marine Oil in his Freightliner, with more than 400,000 miles on the engine.

The company decided on a routine of oil analysis and filter change at 15,000.

"We did this procedure three times at a 15,000-mile analysis and filter change only," Keller said. "Each time the oil sample report came back saying the oil was good for continued use."

Manager Michael Keller is in charge of making sure the trucks are in top shape when they get on the road.

After the third round of analysis, the oil was changed. The company plans to continue with 15,000-mile analysis and filter changes and to continue to use the same oil for an interval of 50,000 miles.

"That's about five times longer than before," Keller said. "It's very good. Keller Grain is now convinced that AMSOIL is a superior product and that anybody can save money using AMSOIL products."
